Graduate Portrait FAQs: Your Clemson Photography Questions Answered

Planning your Clemson graduate portraits and have a million questions running through your mind? You’re not alone! I get asked the same questions all the time, and I’m here to answer them all so you can feel confident and prepared for your session. Let’s dive into everything you need to know!

When should I book my graduate portrait session?

I recommend booking 2-3 months in advance of your desired date or timeframe. Popular times like fall for those gorgeous colors and spring on Clemson campus fill up incredibly fast! College graduates typically schedule their sessions during the semester they’re graduating, while the earlier you book, the more flexibility you’ll have with dates and times.

What should I wear for my graduate portraits?

Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable! I recommend bringing 2-3 outfit options including your cap and gown. Stick with classic, timeless pieces in colors that complement your skin tone and the natural backgrounds. Avoid busy patterns or large logos that can distract from YOU. Think about incorporating your school colors subtly, and don’t forget about shoes and accessories!

Where are the best locations on Clemson campus for graduate photos?

Clemson has SO many iconic spots! Bowman Field with Tillman Hall in the background is the classic must-have shot. Other favorites include the Carillon Bell tower, Sikes Hall, the Reflection Pond, Library Bridge, and Tiger Walk in front of the stadium. During your session, we can hit multiple locations to give you variety in your final gallery!

How long does a graduate portrait session take?

Most graduate portrait sessions last between 1-2 hours depending on how many locations and outfit changes you want. This gives us plenty of time to capture a diverse gallery without feeling rushed. We’ll walk around campus, try different poses and angles, and make sure you feel relaxed and natural throughout the entire session!

Can I bring props or items from my major?

ABSOLUTELY! I love when graduates incorporate meaningful items that tell their unique story. Stethoscopes for nursing majors, hard hats for engineers, basketballs for athletes, or anything else that represents your Clemson journey. These personal touches make your portraits even more special and meaningful!

What if the weather is bad on my session day?

South Carolina weather can be unpredictable, but don’t worry! We’ll keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session. If we need to reschedule due to rain or severe weather, we’ll find a new date that works for both of us. Clemson also has beautiful indoor locations and covered areas we can use as backup options!

When will I receive my photos?

You can expect to receive sneak peeks within 24 hours and your full edited gallery within 1 week of your session. I take time to carefully edit each image to ensure they’re absolutely perfect! You’ll receive a link to your private online gallery where you can view, download, and share your favorite photos.

How many photos will I receive?

You’ll receive a curated gallery of beautifully edited images from your session. The exact number varies depending on your session length and how many locations and outfits we capture, but you can expect a comprehensive collection that showcases the variety and beauty of your session!

Should I get professional hair and makeup done?

This is completely up to you and your comfort level! Many graduates do their own hair and makeup and look absolutely stunning. If having professional hair and makeup would make you feel more confident and pampered, then it’s definitely worth considering! The most important thing is that you feel like your best self.

What should I do to prepare for my session?

Get plenty of rest the night before, stay hydrated, and plan your outfits in advance. Steam or iron your clothes, and bring any props or accessories you want to include. Most importantly, come ready to have FUN and celebrate this amazing achievement! I’ll guide you through posing and make sure you feel comfortable the entire time.

Do I need to know how to pose?

Not at all! I’ll guide you through everything. Most people feel a bit awkward in front of the camera at first, and that’s completely normal. I’ll give you clear directions and prompts that help you look natural and relaxed. By the end of the session, you’ll be a pro!

Can I bring a friend or my roommate to the session?

You’re welcome to bring someone along for moral support! Sometimes having a friend there helps you relax and laugh naturally. Just keep in mind that we want to stay focused on YOUR portraits, so I recommend keeping the entourage small.

What’s the best time of day for graduate portraits?

Golden hour, which is the hour or two before sunset, provides the most beautiful, flattering light for portraits. The soft, warm glow makes everyone look amazing! Morning light can also be gorgeous. I’ll help you choose the best time based on your schedule and the season.
