Better dates. Better light. Less stress. And more time to enjoy the process rather than scramble through it.

When to Start Thinking About Senior Portraits
The short answer: now.
I know that feels early. But here is the reality of how senior portrait season works on Hilton Head Island:
The most popular session times fill up first and fast. I limit the number of senior sessions I take each season intentionally, because I want to give every senior my full attention. When those spots are gone, they are gone.
The families who reach out in the summer before or early fall of their senior year are the ones who get their pick of dates, times, and locations. The families who wait until school starts in August are often looking at a very limited calendar.
My recommendation for the Class of 2027: Plan to reach out in the summer of 2026! Lock in your date before fall booking season opens. Then relax, knowing that it is handled.
Understanding the Hilton Head Senior Portrait Timeline
Here is how the senior portrait process typically unfolds:
Summer/Early Fall (May through August): Reach out, book your session date, and lock in your spot with a retainer. I send you my full client guide so you have the entire summer to prepare thoughtfully.
Fall (September through November): Decide on your locations, plan your outfits, get your senior actually excited about it. This is also when summer sessions happen for families who want a more off-peak, relaxed timing.
Spring (March through May): Peak senior portrait season on Hilton Head! The weather is beautiful, the light is incredible, florals are in bloom, and the island is less crowded. These months are when most of my senior sessions happen!
Editing and delivery (1 week after your session): Your gallery arrives in an online delivery system where you can view, download, and order products from your images.
Choosing Your Location
Hilton Head Island has some of the most stunning senior portrait locations on the East Coast, and part of what makes this place so special is how much variety there is within a relatively small area. You can shoot on a gorgeous beach at golden hour, then drive ten minutes and be under an ancient canopy of live oak trees draped in Spanish moss.
Here is a quick overview of the main locations I work with:
The beach: The classic Hilton Head senior portrait experience. Wide, gorgeous shoreline, incredible light, timeless images.
Harbour Town: The iconic lighthouse, the marina, the colorful storefronts. Editorial, elevated, and instantly recognizable as Hilton Head.
Lowcountry live oaks and Spanish moss: The most dramatic and unique option on the island. Ancient trees, dappled golden light, images that look like nothing else anywhere.
Shelter Cove marina: A cleaner, more contemporary waterfront option with beautiful reflected light and a more modern aesthetic.
The marsh: Wide open sky, golden grass, a cinematic quality that surprises most clients who had not considered it.
Most of my senior sessions incorporate two locations for maximum variety. We will talk through all of this when you reach out.
What to Wear: The Basics
Full outfit planning guidance comes with your client guide after booking, but here are the foundational principles for Hilton Head senior portrait outfits:
Choose colors that complement the landscape. Soft neutrals (ivory, cream, sage, warm white), ocean-inspired tones (dusty blue, coral, seafoam), earthy tones for live oak sessions (terracotta, rust, camel). All of these photograph beautifully against Hilton Head’s scenery.
Wear something that feels like you. The most stunning senior portraits are the ones where the senior feels genuinely at home in what they are wearing. Do not wear something because it looks good on a Pinterest board. Wear something because it feels like your best self.
Beach sessions: leave the heels at home. Bare feet, sandals, and white sneakers are all beautiful on the beach. High heels in sand are not.
How to Prepare Your Senior for the Session
This is the thing most parents do not think to ask about, and it makes a bigger difference than almost anything else.
Talk it up, not out. If your senior is nervous about being photographed, the worst thing you can do is validate every concern (“I know you hate photos, but just try to cooperate”). Instead: “I have seen her work and it is incredible. You are going to look so good.” Plant the expectation of a good experience.
Let them be involved. Seniors who have a say in their session (where we shoot, what they wear, what vibe they want) feel ownership over it rather than like something is being done to them. This alone changes the energy walking in.
Get them fed and hydrated beforehand. This sounds obvious, but a hungry, thirsty senior who has been dragged to a photo session they were not excited about is going to produce very different images than one who is comfortable and cared for.
Trust the photographer. Once you are there, let me lead. My job is to make your senior feel comfortable, to give them direction so they never feel lost, and to capture who they actually are. Show up, enjoy watching your kid shine, and let me do my job.
Vacation Senior Sessions: For Families Visiting the Island
Not every family booking a Hilton Head senior session is local. A significant portion of my clients are families who visit the island every summer and want to use the trip to capture this milestone in a location that holds meaning for their family.
If that is you, a few things to know:
Reach out well in advance of your trip dates, because popular vacation weeks (4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day) fill up very fast. I am happy to work with your vacation schedule to find an evening that works, and I always recommend scheduling your session toward the middle of your trip so your senior is relaxed and in vacation mode.
Many families choose to shoot near their resort or rental property for a more personal, effortless feel. Others want to add Harbour Town or the live oaks to their session to get locations they might not have easy beach access to. We will figure out the best plan for your specific trip when you reach out.
