If I had a dollar for every time a senior told me “I am so bad at photos” or “I never know what to do with my hands” right before their session, I would have a lot of dollars! This is honestly one of the most common fears seniors have before their session and I completely understand why. Most people are not used to being in front of a camera. It feels weird at first! But here is the truth about posing and why I promise you will not look awkward in your ASP Senior portraits.
Why Most People Feel Awkward on Camera
Here is something I want you to know. Feeling awkward in front of a camera does not mean you are not photogenic. It means you are a completely normal human being! The reason people look stiff or uncomfortable in photos is almost never about how they look. It is almost always about not knowing what to do with their body, and that is 100% fixable.
When someone stands in front of a camera with no direction, the brain kind of freezes. You become hyperaware of every body part and nothing feels natural. That is where a photographer who knows how to pose and direct their clients makes all the difference.
What Posing Guidance Actually Looks Like at an ASP Session
At every single ASP Senior session, I pose you for every single photo. Every. Single. One. You will never be standing there wondering what to do or trying to figure out where to put your arms. I am constantly guiding, adjusting, and directing throughout the entire session so that you always know exactly what I need from you.
Here is what that looks like in practice:
– I tell you exactly where to stand, sit, or move
– I give you specific direction for your hands, your chin, your posture, and your gaze
– I coach you through the in-between moments where the most natural expressions happen
– I keep things light and fun so that what comes through in your images is genuine joy, not forced smiling
– When something is not quite working, I make a small adjustment and we try again. No big deal at all!
The Secret to Natural-Looking Portraits
Here is something that might surprise you. The most natural-looking images almost never happen from a completely rigid pose. They happen from the moment right after a pose when you relax slightly, or the moment I say something funny and you laugh for real, or the moment you look away and then back. My job is to set up the conditions for those moments to happen and then capture them when they do.
What this means for you is that you do not have to try to look natural. I create the environment where natural just happens!
What My Seniors Say About the Posing Experience
I hear this from almost every senior after their session and it is one of my favorite things to read in a review. Something along the lines of “I was so nervous going in but she made it so easy and so comfortable.” The seniors who come in the most nervous are often the ones who end up with the most stunning galleries because they trusted the process and relaxed into it.
Tips for Feeling More Confident Going Into Your Session
Even though I take care of all the posing, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to set yourself up for the most confident session possible:
– Wear something that makes you feel amazing. Confidence starts with how you feel in your outfit. If you feel great, it shows instantly on camera.
– Get a good night of sleep. You will look and feel so much better when you are rested.
– Eat before your session. You want to feel energized and comfortable, not distracted by being hungry.
– Listen to your favorite playlist on the way. Showing up in a good mood makes a huge difference in your energy during the session.
– Trust me completely. Seriously. The less you try to control how you look and the more you just follow my direction, the better your images will be. I promise!
The Bottom Line
You are not going to look awkward in your ASP Senior portraits. I will not let that happen! From the very first frame to the very last, I am guiding you through every single moment of your session. Your only job is to show up, have fun, and trust the process.
I have photographed hundreds of seniors and every single one of them walked away with images they genuinely loved. You are going to be no different and I cannot wait to prove it to you!
